WELKIN GENRE PRIZE 2026 - SHORTLISTED
Whenever My Husband Reaches a Sexual Climax, he Shouts ‘Annabel!’
by S A Greene

I have this on excellent authority from my best friend, Linda, whose name is decidedly not Annabel. Linda insists I speak to him about this, though it’s hardly my responsibility. Still, she’s a friend.
‘Kevin,’ I say gently, over a boiled egg. ‘Who is this Annabel, and must you cry out her name during orgasm? It upsets Linda, you know.’
Kevin gets all defensive. Denies knowing any Annabels. Insists the person he thinks about during sex is Perpetua, from Book Group. The bossy one.
‘Perpetua!?’ Linda and I giggle over this together, half-drunk. It’s good to have a best friend.
S A Greene's short short stories have featured wombats, capybaras, eels, a musical vagina, tables (dining, kitchen, picnic), a foetus with dodgy political leanings, a set of 10 testicles, and a blue sponge.
